The design of the stairs is a challenging task for designers. It requires knowledge of art and the science of structures. The design philosophy involved in creating each of the staircases in this book is discussed. The manner of construction of the staircase is not merely aimed at the practical element of transversing two levels of a building. Instead, it is a three dimensional sculpture in the form of a staircase. There must be a harmonious relationship between the each section of the staircase and the space between. A staircase is art, and it is art that can be utilised and enjoyed.
